Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

Hi!

I have to change the IP-address of remote printer on a HP-UX server. I have tried with SAM but it seems I have to "Remove..." and then "Add Remote Printer/Plotter..."!? Or can I just edit some file somewhere?

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

check the printer interface file in /etc/lp/interfaces

It should contain a line that starts

PERIPH=

This will either have the IP address for the printer, or the name if it's been set up in the hosts file or DNS.

Hi,

check the /etc/hosts file.

# grep ipadress /etc/hosts

Hope it helps.

Hi!
IP Address? - So you mean Network printer.
Try to find script, related to this
printer in /etc/lp/interfaces and
edit the line:

PERIPH =

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

Hey..

Thanks for a very quick answer - but sorry
I don't have the /etc/lp/interfaces file.

When looking at the printer with SAM I can see
the IP address in the "Location" column:
printer1 remote yes, idle yes pr1 on

Hi!
Sorry - look in /etc/lp/interface/pr1
for this parameter.

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

/etc/lp/interface is a directory that should contain a file for each and everyone of your printers. Just find the one that you want to change and edit it to change the parm. If the parameter is set to a name, then you'll have to change /etc/hosts or the DNS, depending of where you have defined this name.

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

Nop! the printer/IPaddress can not be found in the /etc/hosts file. So where does SAM get/hide the IPaddress? (-and is it safe to edit this file?)

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

Yes! thanks - I have now spotted the printer1 file in the /etc/lp/interface directory. There is a comment in this file reading:
# lp interface for remote spooling.

But I can't find any IP address specified (or any parameter that could contain the IP address)...

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

find the parameter PERIPH= , it should be about 7 pages down, and should have something beside it. It should be your IP

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

If it is indeed a *remote* printer, i.e. the printer is configured as a *local* printer on a *remote* system, then you indeed have to remove and re-add the printer with SAM or lpadmin(1M).

If the printer is a *network* printer, i.e. you print *directly* to the printer, not via another system, then things are different.

And then there are network printers which act as if they are remote printers. For SAM/lpadmin you should treat these printers as *remote* printers.

So what do *you* have? I.e. printer manufacturer and model? How is it connected and to which system(s)? What (HP) software do you use for the printer? Etc..

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

First of all it's a printer on a system of one of our customers I'm (trying to) manage??? I don't know exactly what make/model/kind of printer we are talking about. The printer is placed overseas ???but I guess it's a printer with a network adapter (like a JetDirect)

As I wrote earlier on SAM shows Type=remote - but when I Telnet the IP-address it seems to be this network adapter responding - not another system/host so it seems to be a *Network* printer:

# telnet
Trying...
Connected to
Escape character is '^]'.
Local flow control off
TallyCom+ PSIO

User:
Password:

Now I have Removed the printer and Added it again with SAM - and have to go through the same procedure on a couple of other hosts using the same printer???

Many thanks to all for advice

(Still a bit confused about this *Remote* / *Network* printer concept)

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

We have Tally Com boxes, they're little print servers just like JetDirect boxes.
I seem to remember I used to have to set the IP Address using arp within 10 seconds of turning the thing on. Although I believe they have software that does it as well (and better). Do I remember connecting using a browser like iexplorer?

As for the IP address, I set the host's IP address in /etc/hosts, this then tells it where the print server is (the print server is acting like a host with a remote printer on it).

Er as per usual I'm a bit slow on the uptake. I guess you've fixed your problem now.

Here's a bit from the Tally Com Quick Installation Guide.

Which might help you to discover the default user and password, which may or may not help.

Re: Changing IP-address on remote printer on HP-UX

For future reference, if you configure your network printers via a hostname/FQDN, you won't have to adjust spooler files when one changes IP addresses. When you change /etc/hosts or the DNS zone, whichever is applicable, the name will then map to the new address and the spooler won't need to know.
