Changing machine identification number

How can I PERMANENTLY change the machine identification number (wich can be displayed with the command "uname -i") on a specific machine and set it to a number of my choice?

Re: Changing machine identification number

That is not possible for you to do. It is a product identification mark for HP production to change only.

Re: Changing machine identification number

You can change it, but the last person who did is serving 14 years at a Federal Penitentiary. Granted, he changed a LOT of machine identification numbers and resold them, but HP FROWNS on the practice big time.

This is how they track whether the box is an HP9000 or HP3000, how many licenses you have purchased (VERY expensive on a HP3000), etc. This tracking number is cradle to grave through the HP contracts group. The gentleman in question took cheap HP9000's, changed this info and resold them as very expensive HP3000's.

Re: Changing machine identification number

Hi Fedon,

Everything as been said, or nearly...

This is STRICTLY reserved to HP so don't even dream about it ;-)

Best regards,

Dan
