is there a way in 1020 to change the name, trying to think of easy way to achieve.
i think easiest might be to reimage with ignite and make changes then.
any ideas

There is no way out. Reimage with ignite & make the required changes.

SolutionNo.
You can even on alive system use vgexport and then vgimport to import the volume groups under a new name.
But you may run into boot issues.
