Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

That is good ..

I think that Mr. Clay should write a book. Or at least an E-book. But not about HPUX ..I would enjoy to hear more about his stories in the biz. He has told some stories on the forum about how he handles people. Now that is good stuff!! ..

Dan,
For some reason I could not open the link,(301 Error!) but Clay's contribution in this forum itself is more than sufficient to know about his in-depth knowledge in this field. Nobody can beat his famous day calculation perl program.

Keep it up!

Very interesting stuff. zero unplanned downtime in over 3 years is almost as impressive as +30000 points.

So Clay, I believe I read recently that observations seem to indicate the universe's rate of expansion is actually increasing, possibly lending support to Einstein's "greatest blunder" of the cosmological constant (lambda). I know very little about astronomy - what are your views on this subject? Is there some possibility of this, or do you believe that the observations will turn out to be an incorrect interpretation of the data?

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

I think the date calculator shell is the most downloaded shell from the forums. It seems it have help a lot of people. Thanks Clay ( even i dont use it) and congrats; it not easy to write a shell that can help people over a half-world.

I also agree with your words about the forums and his people, and i know they are shared by other relevant members, as i read in the internet, out of the forum.

Maybe this is the bigger? sucessful history of the forum. All we together have build an open comunity where anybody can find help and knowledge, and where you can feel friendiness.

And the guy still finds the time to write articles for SysAdmin magazine as well!

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi Dan,

do you intend to have a bio about each and everyone of us online? ;-) (maybe only about "green salad hats", and volunteers - I almost never volunteer, BTW)

All of us (except certain EEs) love our "warm'n fuzzy" Clay, don't we?

And since he stays in his office until the stars come out, he's got plenty of time to answer that many questions (he seems to have more than ten fingers - to type that fast, and maybe work in multiple time zones concurrently, though). As he started his professional life as a physist, I guess he's a fast reader, so reading all this won't delay him much, I am afraid, M.Frederick.

And we all use our *real* name (I just have not figured out, yet, wether "X" is XMAN's first name or surname), since that tells the reader(s), that we believe in what we write (what's the "A." for, btw? For us he's not "A Clay", but "The Clay". And the "A" is even hidden in his email address)...

Richard, a famous brit (Terry Pratchett) has written a book only about his feet ("Feet of Clay", and the humour in there is pretty close to our Clay's own), so he doesn't have to. It would be an interesting reading, though, I guess "All the things I forgot about UN*X" or like that.

Regards,
One of the fans

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Rita makes a vague reference to what the "A" stands for in this thread (but I don't know whether to believe her or not):

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hello everybody,

I just read Clay's bio and all I can say is that anybody who likes "Alice in Wonderland" can't be all bad. Did you notice that even there he tried to teach us something? Clay was very helpful in a posting last week. He helped my daughter prepare a presentation for her high-school computer course.

His unique style is unmatched and I will never forget my very first posting. I was having trouble with awk and Clay very quickly and matter of factly answered the question. I then got some conflicting advice from another forumer with a crown. It involved adding kernel patches and changing some kernel settings. Mr. "Warm 'n Fuzzy" then came back and I felt like I had just been hit with a brick but it was just what I needed to hear! I then applied his solution and it worked perfectly.

Clay, keep up the good work.

Thanks again, Mary

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Nice ready Clay, and well done ;)

Alice will require a re-read, I saw it always as a girls book, so never read it. Now I did read everything from David Eddings, Tolkein, Heinlin, Hubbard, Hemmingway, etc.. ;)

Anyway, great to know the experiences behind the text on the forums, and a bit of insight into the personality as well.

Sincerely,
Shannon

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi Pete,

you are kidding, aren't you?
The only name mentioned by Rita in that thread is "Ann"!?!
No offense meant, but I've always got the impression that "our" Clay uses these names since his very early childhood days...

Shannon, neither of the two books about "Alice" (a real life girl, when he wrote it) nor the Little Princes, Jonathan Livingston Seagulls, Mr. Chips, and the like are "girls" books (at least all we *boys* love reading them). Maybe Clay can give some examples of other books he likes (hopefully NOT from Hubbard :-)?

Clay, please, can you tell us some more books you like reading more than once?

Thanks,
Wodisch (who never denies to be curious)

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

I should clarify that I read Hubbards SCI-FI books, and not the scientology books. Battlefield Earth was a very long, but well done book. Some of the detail in there I have yet to see anywhere else.

no offense to any of the church of scientology folks, just not my bag ;)

Sincerely,
Shannon

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Excellent write-up Dan and a well-deserved one for Clay.

I see a psychological relation between Clay's interest in 'Alice in wonderland' and his skills demonstrated here. It's the creativity that he likes and displays.

Hey Pete,

You're such a funny guy. To be honest, I had a very wrong impression about you. But now, I know I was wrong. I get what you saying, perhaps when I meet A. Clay, I'll find out if Rita was just guessing!!
No offense.

Thanks.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hello Friends:

Thanks for all the "Warm 'n Fuzzy" words. I've been a tad busy so it took a little while to respond.

For those of you who like to know the other books I re-read, those include "Mr.Tompkins in Wonderland" and "Mr Tompkins Explores the Atom". Although these were written decades ago and the physics is a little dated, they're a wonderful way to get an insight into the way physicists think. Our hero, Mr. Tompkins, gets to do things like ride his bicycle on a beam of light. His father-in-law, a physicist, then explains why he saw what he saw. In one episode, Mr. Tompkins meets Maxwell's Demon. This books were written by a very famous physicist, George Gamov.

I also enjoy reading alternate history. For those of you who enjoy difficult multiple reads, I suggest Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury". (Of course, coming from my part of the world, Faulkner is required reading.) I can assure that you can read that puppy ten times and still be amazed.

Wondering if it's as in Einstein?

Cheers Clay,

P.S. Loved the article in SysAdmin. Very creative indeed! Surprised they let an HP guy contribute. They seem SOOOOO Sun oriented.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Jeff,

If you think about it you know he HAS to be related to an Einstein. Look at all of the similarities.

Come to think of it, maybe it???s THE Einstein reincarnated???
