Checking for link

I have an HP-UX box that is in a colo datacenter. I am able to get to the console but not to the NIC. Is there an O/S level command I can use that could tell me if the NIC is detecting link?

Linkloop is the lowest level command available as it operates on the MAC address. You can use lanscan to identify the MAC address. Man linkloop, lanscan for details.

to check status of each interface.

do a lanscan from the console and see how many network interfaces you have and run ifconfig command against every each of them like this

ifconfig lan0
ifconfig lan1
...
ifconfig lanX

you should see an output like this on everyone, not the same but similar:

lan0: flags=1843
inet 10.45.6.1 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.45.6.255


the word UP is an indication of the interface being up as well as the numeric 843. In case of a down interface, this value becomes 842.

Thanks all for your quick replies. Link loop output leads me to suspect that the switch port is down or the cable is unplugged. Thanks again for all of you help.
