Re: Clone diferents systems

Unless hardware is identical between systems, Ignite cloning will not work very well, if at all.

Sorry, no.

Re: Clone diferents systems

Hi, castro

cloning can be done using ignite only if the harware are identical. since in your case hardware are different cloning can't be done.

Re: Clone diferents systems

Hi

some time if the hardware diff. is not like this is can be done if you are installing all the patches in the support plus cd

but D280 and L1000 are too diff. to do this .

i will advise you to install a new system on the L-1000 and all the applic and mount all the disk of the D280 through nfs and then copy the info with the command :

cd /mount_point ( the nfs filesystem )
find . | cpio -pdmaux /local_mount_point ( the system that you want to copy to ) .

you need to remember that if you are installing software for a new server you need to buy the applic .

if you are shutting down the D280 you can move all your license to the new server

Re: Clone diferents systems

hi,

I used to give this response ... Not possible to clone if hardwares are too different. But with very recent versions of Ignite-UX, there is a whole paragraph concerning Cloning on different HW, as well as information on a new selector "Clone to different HW" in the recovery gui. From the make_tape_recovery man page :

Using the Recovery Tape to Clone a System :
When creating a recovery tape for the purpose of cloning one system to another, it is best to run make_tape_recovery using the -i option.
This will allow you to interact with the installation and make any changes necessary (such as changing which disks to use, hostname and IP address). If you do not use the -i option to create the tape, you will be given 10 seconds when using the recovery tape to stop the automatic installation. The procedure below describes this situation.
...
Using a recovery tape to clone systems will only work if the two systems are capable of running the same software configuration. This means that the source system must contain a version of HP-UX with all necessary patches and driver software required by the clone system.

If the two systems are different hardware models, a new kernel will automatically be built to suit the new hardware. If the two systems are the same model, the clone will by default use the kernel from the original system. You may force a kernel to be built by using the "Additional" screen in the Advanced user interface to set the "Cloning to different HW?" selector to TRUE.
...

So have a try and give us the result. You will perhaps get a good surprise ... But remember to install lastest version of Ignite and use the '-i' option in make_tape_recovery.

Re: Clone diferents systems

You can clone systems with different hardware by using IGNITE and GoldenImage:

Re: Clone diferents systems

Just to add to what Jean-Louis is saying, it is now possible to clone a system with different hardware with the new versions of Ignite. I did it myself cloning a couple of servers (did an L and an N) onto a K-class.
Cooperation is doing with a smile what you have to do anyhow.

Re: Clone diferents systems

Yes, ignite is the tool.

I've gotten away with cloning a 32 bit D to a 64 bit L, but I didn't like the way things worked, so I took a different approach.

Ignite is a great tool, and I recommend the class from HP though, and a support contract.
