cluster lock

Hello,

What is cluster lock? Is it possible to use it in packages for storing packages data?
I created a VG with name /dev/vg02, now is it possible to create lvol1,lvol2,lvol3 and use lvol1 for cluster lock and lvol2,lvol3 in cluster’s packages (for storing data)?or I should created another VG for packages? Which method is preferred and why?

Re: cluster lock

A cluster lock is a disk device and it can be used to store data. It is not housed within an LVOL but rather at the physical device level. Generally, lock disks, even for 2-node clusters, are avoided nowadays. It is normally better practice to setup a Quorum server instead. A little PC running Linux makes a nice QS.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: cluster lock

A cluster lock disk is simply a way of avoiding the "split brain" problem within SG.

All it is is some space in the VG bad block area that is able to store the cluser/node id. The rest of the disk is yours to play with/use etc.

Re: cluster lock

Shalom,

The primary function of a cluster lock disk is to decide when a SG cluster loses heartbeat which node continues to be the cluster and what node reboots TOC(Transfer of control).

It simply needs to be there and can be also part of a volume group and have data on it. It needs to be on shared storage so that both nodes can reach it.

Re: cluster lock

Hi Hasan,

Cluster lock disk has nothing to do with the package data.

Take a look at this thread to learn about what a cluster lock disk is and what it is used for.

Hope this helps.

Re: cluster lock

Cluster lock has to do with Arbirtration between nodes to see which one will stay up in the case that they cannot communicate with one another.

Look at this document for more details:

Re: cluster lock

Thank you everybod,

What is the required size for cluster lock?

Re: cluster lock

There are no size requirements; the disk (or LUN) simply has to be accessible from all the nodes. Again, a lock disk is not the preferred arbitration method. You should really be looking at a quorum server.

Re: cluster lock

Thank you,
Which method is prefered?
1. create one small dedicated VG for lock and another dedicated VG for data.
2. create a VG for both lock and data.
I will be appreciate you if explain which one is better and why.
