Cold 11.0 install on A500 without a tape drive.

Hi,
I need to do a cold install from the march 2002 install/update/recovery cd on a A500 server but it does not have a built in dvdrom and I dont have an external one free to put on it. Is there a way to do this over the network?

Hi,

You need to put an external or internal cd drive to do the cold install. If you have a Ignite UX installed on another server then you can install the OS on this A class server thro network.

Yes I have ignite installed on another server. Where do I go from there?

Richard

Do you have a DAT drive , then you can create an ignite on the dat media in the server having HPUX 11.00 ( ofcourse a A500) and use the dat to load the OS in this machine

Richard,

As you have ignite UX installed on another server you can install the OS in your server by using the following steps,

1) power on the system and interrupt while it's booting

2) Then type search lan install at the prompt

> search lan install

This command will give you the IP address and details of the another server having Ignite UX.

3) Run

> boot lan install

and start the installation from there.

Re: Cold 11.0 install on A500 without a tape drive.

Here are some docs on Ignite/UX that may help get you pointed in the right direction.

Ignite/UX Cold Installations
http://software.hp.com/products/IUX/docs/intro_doc.html

Ignite/UX Administration Guide:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90749/B2355-90749.html

I think the part you really want to look at is the section on "Using Golden System Images".

You will have to have some type of installable image on your Ignite/UX server before you can boot your A500 over the network from the server. For ease of network booting you also want to make sure that both the server and the client are on the same subnet.
