Cold Install

I have to do a cold install on one of our boxes. Is there any documentation on the cold install process, not general overviews, but specific information on file system type question, swap space, etc..... Which file system is best to use? VFS or HFS? How much swap space should I use? take the default or configure swap space related to how much memory we have on the machine? Are there any good documents on HP-UNIX to describe, well everything? Information on the operating system and the hardware cofigurations?

Re: Cold Install

Hi,

There are some good docs you can find at http://docs.hp.com

This is a doc to read before you install or upgrade to 11.0
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/5971-2260.pdf

This is a doc for HPUX 11.0 Installation and Update Guide
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/5971-0642.pdf

This is a "Quick Start Guide for Easy Setup HP-UX 11.0 "
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/B5532-90001.pdf

Re: Cold Install

Hi, Jeff-

Try searching here in the forums for installing 11.0. There are a number of threads about stuff to do pre-install and post-install, as well as tips on the install process. I think it is best to use vxfs for everything except possibly /stand (use hfs), since this allows for using hte online jfs tools. As far as sizes for everything, remember that it is easier to expand than shrink, so err on the conservative side (you can just use defaults and expand as needed). Good luck.

Re: Cold Install

Hi Jeff,

If you are looking specifics, it would help if you give more details.

Are you installing 10.20? 11.00? 11i? on what kind of machine? how much memory? what kind of internal disks do you have (size of the disks) etc.

Again most of the documents give generalized procedures because everyone has different configurations/needs.

Re: Cold Install

If you can, prior to the install, make printouts of your file system information you currently have as well as a print_manifest to use a a guide for your new install. If the defaults are bigger, use them, if not go with what you had. I don't know what your physical memory is, but in my case, most of my machines have 8GB physical and 4GB swap+dump, which has been plenty. You can always add device swap to the other vgs as needed. Make your file systems VxFS (except /stand).

Take care and good luck
