Re: Configuring NIS

Which do you need NIS or DNS? They are totally different services to configure. One can be configured without the other, but both will take a bit of time to get configured.

Re: Configuring NIS

Hi!

Really I need a DOMAIN NAME, I try to configure this in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf I replace the line: Dj$Foo.com
whit: gamhap22.intl.pvt
and I replace the value of vars:

NAMED=1
NAMED_ARGS="-b /etc/named.boot"

after this I try to star the named daemond,

but when I typo the command: nslookup I receive the follow error:

*** Can't find server name for address 165.197.192.120: Server failed
*** Default servers are not available
Using /etc/hosts on: gamhap22

What I need to do for configure this?

Tkns!

Re: Configuring NIS

Hi Noell,

This a strange situation, you are trying to installl oracle 8i, and the application is asking for NIS, DNS and you configure a sendmail file ????

Im not a oracle expert but isn't a alias in the
/etc/hosts file not enough ?
example

172.985.999.99 my_hp my_hp.com

Re: Configuring NIS

DNS is not configured through the sendmail.cf file. That is strictly for mail. You say you need a domain name. Are you just needing to set you domain name? If so, check and see if you have a file /etc/resolv.conf and look at it.

Re: Configuring NIS

Looks like you have a bit of confusion about what sendmail is asking for.
NIS is a pretty insecure method of sharing usernames, passwords, host info, etc...
NIS+ is the much more robust and secure version of NIS.

DNS is Domain Name server is the standard NAME to IP translation process.

Sendmail is complaining that it can not resolve your domain upon startup. The fix for this is twofold.

1. If you are NOT running DNS currently and do not have a valid Domain Name then fake one. It is easiest to use SAM to configure your server as a DNS server, for domain.com unless you have some experience.

2. Fix $j in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf with either your bogus domain name, or the valid one.

I have never seen Oracle 8i complain about no domain name unless you are installing an internet version. If this is the case you should have a real registered domain name provided by your ISP, as well as a IP address which is assigned. This is very important! If you are not really on the internet, then just fake it all :)

Re: Configuring NIS

Tanks to all!

I solve the problem

I edited the files: /etc/rc.config.d/nameserv, resolv.conf and I was create the dorectory /etc/named.data

after this I executed the commands hosts_to_named and named start
