Connecting to single user mode

Hi there..

I heard once that it was possible to connect to a remote machine across a network when the machine itself is in single user mode. Anyone seen or know of such an amazing feat? It defeats the purpose of being in single user mode I know. Inetd is configured but login services haven't started. I'm guessing it uses an exploit of some description.

Thanks..

Re: Connecting to single user mode

via the web based console or the GSP yes..

But these components have a dedicated IP address, and are connected to the server via serial/pci..

It works for me (tm)

Re: Connecting to single user mode

Ian,

If you have configured the GSP for remote access then you can telnet to the GSP "host" no matter what mode your system is in.

Another thing is there are two different single user modes. If the system is brought down to single user mode by "init -s" then a remote login is impossible. However, if brought down to single-user mode by "init -S", remote logins are still allowed.

Re: Connecting to single user mode

Get a WEB CONSOLE and not only go into single user mode, but TOC the machine and anything else you can do from the console (other than actually throwing the power switch).

Thanks for your input Bill, Hai and Harry...

I'm familiar with those technologies. I've inherited a box without the web console. It's unfortunately on the other side of the channel.

Cheers...

Re: Connecting to single user mode

Hi Ian,

You can look into console Servers. Some of these products are available from DIGI.

Hope this helps.

Re: Connecting to single user mode

Without a doubt one of the best things HP has done is to offer the web console for their servers.

Look into getting one if you don't already have one, it's a time saver, and sometimes a life saver!

Re: Connecting to single user mode

Cisco makes a terminal server and we use quite a few of them in our console network.

Input is either dial-in modem from outside or telnet to the terminal server from the lan.

The terminal server ports are connected to the UNIX console ports.

You then select which port you want to connect to and you are on the console.

Re: Connecting to single user mode

We also use the terminal server approach. We have the output of the console dumped to a file which is monitored by ITO to alert us when there are problems. It is a cheaper solution than buying an ITO license for every system. Especially, if it is a limited function system and you don't need all the functionality of the ITO agent.
