Connecting to single user mode
I heard once that it was possible to connect to a remote machine across a network when the machine itself is in single user mode. Anyone seen or know of such an amazing feat? It defeats the purpose of being in single user mode I know. Inetd is configured but login services haven't started. I'm guessing it uses an exploit of some description.
Thanks..

Re: Connecting to single user mode
But these components have a dedicated IP address, and are connected to the server via serial/pci..
Later,
Bill

Re: Connecting to single user mode
If you have configured the GSP for remote access then you can telnet to the GSP "host" no matter what mode your system is in.
Another thing is there are two different single user modes. If the system is brought down to single user mode by "init -s" then a remote login is impossible. However, if brought down to single-user mode by "init -S", remote logins are still allowed.

Re: Connecting to single user mode
Get a WEB CONSOLE and not only go into single user mode, but TOC the machine and anything else you can do from the console (other than actually throwing the power switch).

Re: Connecting to single user mode
I'm familiar with those technologies. I've inherited a box without the web console. It's unfortunately on the other side of the channel.
Cheers...

Re: Connecting to single user mode
You can look into console Servers. Some of these products are available from DIGI.

Hope this helps.

Re: Connecting to single user mode
Look into getting one if you don't already have one, it's a time saver, and sometimes a life saver!

Re: Connecting to single user mode
Input is either dial-in modem from outside or telnet to the terminal server from the lan.
The terminal server ports are connected to the UNIX console ports.
You then select which port you want to connect to and you are on the console.
