I want gain space on /var and i identify that /var/adm/sw/save directory have a lot of directories PSS* ,
the question is could i backup these directories and then remove some of them to gain space on /var ? or these are mandatory directories of the Operating System ? we use HPUX 11.0 64 bits

DO NOT REMOVE THESE FILES. At least not directly. Use the cleanup command. e.g. cleanup -c 1. That will remove all the files that have been superceded at least once. If you manually remove these files manully, the software management database will be corrupt and future patches will fail. It's quite common to mount /var/adm/sw under a separate filesystem on large systems. Early version of 11.0 lacked the cleanup command so if you do not find it, search the patch database for 'cleanup' and swinstall it.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

cleanup -c 1

will do this by committing patches superseded more than once.

Do not touch anything in there with the command line.

Hi Alejandro,

Don't just delete them.
Use the cleanup command to remove them - preview tha actions as follows:

cleanup -p -c 2

This will show what will be removed by removing patches superseded twice. Then if that give you enough space - just drop the -p & run it.

Re: Could i purge or remove files from /var/adm/sw/save ?

We don't recommend nor use -c 1 as that's *any* patch that's been superseded - not patches superseded more than once.
If you do that & then a critical warning comes out, you will *not* be able to rollback to the preceding patch.

If you use cleanup -c 1, then I suggest you take a backup of /var/adm/sw/save directory onto a tape or a filesystem. If at all if you have backout a patch, you can restore this directory and do it.

Look at warning section of cleanup.
