Create a VxVM diskgroup

Hi,

I need a little help on creating a VxVM diskgroup on my systems. There are 2 HP-UX boxes and both share Oracle database LUNs on EVA4K.
There are 2 LUNs - Oracle DB LUN and Oracle Backup LUN. Each LUN is visible as 4 devices on both nodes since there are 4 paths through SAN switch.
They are:
Oracle Database LUN:
> disk 16 0/3/1/0/4/0.20.1.0.0.0.7 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c4t0d7 /dev/rdsk/c4t0d7
> disk 15 0/3/1/0/4/0.20.5.0.0.0.7 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c6t0d7 /dev/rdsk/c6t0d7
> disk 96 0/4/1/0/4/0.10.1.0.0.0.7 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c8t0d7 /dev/rdsk/c8t0d7
> disk 95 0/4/1/0/4/0.10.5.0.0.0.7 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c10t0d7 /dev/rdsk/c10t0d7

Oracle Backup LUN:
> disk 20 0/3/1/0/4/0.20.1.0.0.1.1 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c4t1d1 /dev/rdsk/c4t1d1
> disk 19 0/3/1/0/4/0.20.5.0.0.1.1 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c6t1d1 /dev/rdsk/c6t1d1
> disk 100 0/4/1/0/4/0.10.1.0.0.1.1 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c8t1d1 /dev/rdsk/c8t1d1
> disk 99 0/4/1/0/4/0.10.5.0.0.1.1 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP HSV200
> /dev/dsk/c10t1d1 /dev/rdsk/c10t1d1

We are using VxVM 4.1 and VxFS.

I am new to VxVM and I want to create 'omcdg' group consisting of both these disks. Can anyone help me out for:

Is 'rootdg' required for VxVM 4.1?
What are the different steps to create 'omcdg' diskgroup with 4 different paths on both machines?

Thanks very much.

Re: Create a VxVM diskgroup

Rajesh,

Namaste.

Best and easiest way to get you started is to use SAM in an X-WIndows Environment. Launch it and go to disk management where you should be able to launch VEA (Veritas Enterprise Administrator).

No rootdg is already optional in VxFS 4.1

One thing you can do with VEA is to also learn the corresponding Command Line used for every VEA task/activity done. This is HOW I learned VxVM and its command set. This is mostly how I advice novice admins to start using VxVM.

Take note though, it is assume you know your way around HP-UX, understands cXtYdZ naming conventions and have an understanding of your storage array as well.

BTW, if you have the full license of VxVM, you should have automaticlaly DMP enabled so only one of the 4 paths(instances) will actually be actively used whilst load balancing happens in the background.

Be sure also you have the proper ASL (Array Support Library) for EVA 4/6/8K arrays installed as this is the true enabler for DMP along with the full VxVM license. HP or Symantec (Veritas) should have provided you with this software. If not, download it from HP or Veritas and install it. It installs non-disruptively.

Hope this helps.

Re: Create a VxVM diskgroup

Thanks very much for all your help.

I have raised another thread with finer details.
Please reply to that thread as well.
