Creation of Duplicate machine

Hello All,

I need information regarding creating a copy of a c3000 type of machine.

The original c3000 type of machine has all the stuff like licences, patches and compilers.
Can there be a single shot method like taking backup in a way that whole of the system including the OS is copied on another machine.

I am giving you full details of Machune
Model c3000

OS: HP-UX 10.2

Liceneces software
RTAP, Rational ClearCase, Perl and some patches from HP-UX.
aCC,c89 compilers

Now in case such method doesn't exists, that what can be the optimum way to recreate a HP-UX machine.
Installation of HPUX10.2 can be done.
Please let me know how to proceed.

Re: Creation of Duplicate machine

Hi,

There are two ways I can think of:

Check out the following documents:

1) Managing HP-UX Software With SD-UX: Allows you to perform customized HP-UX installations over the network.

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90107/B2355-90107.html

2) Ignite-UX Administration Guide: Allows you to create a bootable recovery tape which can be used to restore/install on another identical machine.

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90749/B2355-90749.html

Hope this helps. Regards.

Hi,

I forgot to mention that with Ignite-UX, you can also boot and perform recovery/installations over the network via the use of an Ignite-UX server.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Re: Creation of Duplicate machine

There is a "backdoor" method to create a duplicate machine that I used to do by manually creating a duplicated boot disk and it's data disk and later physically move those disks to another similar machine. By creating this duplicated machine I take it then you want to retain it's hostname and IP and shutdown the old machine ? Before we even get into that I have a question for you .. does all the applications you got installed in your existing machine depends on it's hardware address to activate the license ? If the answer is yes then those applications will not work if it's moved to another machine. If you choose to go this route, please post all your LVM information and its mount points.

Re: Creation of Duplicate machine

Ignite is the best way and will save you a lot of time.

Get the latest ignite installed and do a make_tape_recovery.

Boot the other machine from that tape, and then change any machine specific items that need changing such as hostname, IP, licenses, etc.

Re: Creation of Duplicate machine

Use Ignite UX, make_recovery or make_tape_recovery, it is only cost you about half an hour to make this tape, for the new installation, no so many CD, licenses, patches needed, no so many reboot needed, you can make another identical server easily and quickly, two or three hour is enough, depends on the number of your cpu and memory.
