DAT "AUTO"

Hello,
Still having problems with this dat autoloader.
Can't seem to get it to a second tape. Last night I ran a long backup. Came in, prompt was asking to respond 'Y' for a new tape, 1st tape completed successfully. Am I not loading the tapes correctly? I insert the mag, it see's six tapes and loads one. Is this correct. Do I need to load all tapes by using the front panel of the tape drive? It loads the first tape when I press the ready button, all seems cool. Im guessing that there is only one set of heads in this unit, not six, correct?

Also, for a second tape response, I entered /dev/rmt/1m, thinking it might go to a second device. Well, there was no /dev/rmt/1m, so it created one and filled up / to 100%.
I deleted /dev/rmt/1m, but the system still thinks that / is 100%. Do I have to boot to clear this false reporting?

Thanks,
Sorry for the winded explination.

Re: DAT "AUTO"

Hello

check your /dev/rmt
for any file with big size

find / -size +50000 -print
du -k|sort -nr|more

find / -name core -exec ll {} \;

Thanks

Re: DAT "AUTO"

Hi Robert:

1) Which backup are you using ? Did you configure the library in the backup ? If you are talking about six slot library, then it doesn't mean that you have six *heads* (drives) on it. It just mean that you have six *slots* in that. The arm moves the media from these slots to the specific drive. Normally for Omniback, Legato etc, the arm moves the media from slots to the drives by checking the volume labels.

2) For the / 100% problem- how did you check the file system usage ? The bdf may report incorrect sizes. Check it with:

# cd /dev
# du -k | sort -rn

See if the file exists and the total size. 'bdf' will report the correct size after some time. Do a 'sync' and check it again. It is not necessary that you reboot the system for this purpose.

Re: DAT "AUTO"

Hi Robert,

What you have to do is put the change volume script around fbackup, such that the autoloaer will cheange the DLT when one DLT is full and fbackup needs another DLT and you are using a autoloder. Take a look at this link from ITRC, which suggests a sample script which you can edit to suit your requirements.

Hope this helps.

Re: DAT "AUTO"

Hi Robert,

You don't need to reboot but you will have to kill off the fbackup processes. While the file is still open, it won't get deleted.

As to your tape problem, fbackup (unlike omniback etc) has no knowledge of auto-changers. All it sees is a tape drive. To add this ability, you'll have to specify a 'volume change' script in fbackup's configuration file (see man fbackup) that makes the auto-changer load the next tape.

John
