dds on b2600 doesn't work

I try to connect a DDS 4 to a B2600 workstation but when I search the boor devices I can’t see the external tape drive. The tape drive is connected by a lsi logix scsi card. I also tried a LTO (200 GB) drive but the computer doesn’t see this device. When I connect my broken DLT 40/80 Gb drive and give the sea(rche) commando I can see this device and I can select the device to boot from it. The DDS tape drive and the DLT are hp drives, the LTO is a dell drive. Does anybody know why the DDS isn’t seen by the B2600? The firmware from the B2660is up to date.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Hi,

Please describe the problem properly
If u r facing this problem in the OS then there might some driver issue or if u r using the same from BCH than your card is having some problem. From OS try by doing
#ioscan -fn
And see the controller state if it is claimed than give :-
#ioscan -fnC tape

else check for the driver in the kermal subsystem.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Hello.

Is your var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file giving any messages ? if so post them here please

Also do an ioscan -fnC tape and see if there is a NO_HW state.

It migth be necessary to don an isnf command, but we need more information.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Hello,
Iâ m sorry if I was not clear. I mean that I stop the boot procedure by pressing a key while boot up. Then I type the search commando [sea] and the system gives me the boot devices (P0, P1, ..). The DLT tape is shown as a boot devices (so I can restore an ignite tape) but the DDS and the LTO arenâ t sown so I canâ t boot from them and I canâ t restore an ignite backup on this system.
When I connect the LTO drive to my system and I boot hp-ux 11.0 the tape drive Isnâ t shown with a ioscan.
Thanks for you replies,
Robert Verhagen.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Hi
check your SCSI controller will support the LVD devices or not also check the SCSI ID of the device connected on the SCSI bus.

The dds tape had scsi id 3, this is the same as the broken dlt tape.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Hi again.

can you try this tape device in another server to see if ti works there ?

Maybe the SCSI terminator is not working correctly.

does /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log report anithing?

also check /etc/rc.log

and please post the findings of both files here ?

Finally remember to assign points for any helpfull answers.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

Best guess would be that the DLT40/80 unit is a fast wide differential one where the DDS and LTO are lvd units.
If that's the case both DDS and LTO will not work on that interface.

Re: dds on b2600 doesn't work

I did not know that there are HDV and LDV scsi devices. I googled and I found the following:

How About LVD-HVD Compatibility?

So now we have shown compatibility between LVD and SE SCSI. What about HVD SCSI? I am sorry to have to tell you that there is no more direct compatibility between LVD and HVD SCSI than there is between HVD and SE SCSI. It does not exist. Placing an LVD device on an HVD bus will cause the LVD device to shut down. Placing an HVD device on an LVD bus will cause the entire LVD bus to shut down.

I think I have to by a LVD scsi cart to connect the DDS or LTO devices.

Thanks for your help!
