DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Just wondering if anyone has run into this problem. When I make a kernel change, I check, defer kernel changes until later, because I don't want to reboot during the day. However, the next time the system reboots, I dont see my changes. Seems like checking 'defer until later' is the same as 'cancel all kernel modifications'. Has anyone seen this problem.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Hi Robert,

did you defer kernel changes to later, or did you chose make a system reboot later? Only second option is what you want. You *have* to create a new kernel, but you can boot at a later time. This should do it for you.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Have you check /stand to see if a new kernel was built? If not, then it appears 'defer' is the same as 'cancel'.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Hello,

When you check the defer kernel changes until later, I believe you are required to buiild the kernel manually.

Hope this helps

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Hi again Robert,

if do some changes for kernel, and don't want to reboot at this time i take the following procedure:

--> make the needed changes
--> let same make a new kernel (and a copy of the old one, which is actually in RAM)
--> tell sam to do the reboot at a later time

This works allways fine for me.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Hi Robert,

If you reboot the system without regenrating the kernel, the last kernel changes are back and you have do the changes once again. What you should do is defer the changes but before rebooting the system, regenarate the kernel and reboot.

Hope this helps.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

Robert,

You do need to build the kernel now. You'll get a warning window in SAM that allows you to choose not to move the kernel/not shutdown now. Then you need to run kmupdate which moves the kernel files into place. Then you can schedule your reboot when it's convenient.

Re: DEFER KERNEL REBUILD---BUG

After you make the changes with SAM, carefully read the message while regenerating the Kernel file. You will have an option to rebuild the Kernel now, but do not reboot now. You can do this and reboot at a later time.

Make sure that you are not doing multiple changes without a reboot ! I always schedule the shutdown time and tune the kernel, because for me it's of no use if I tune the kernel and not using it.
