Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

We are currently using MC ServiceGuard on two machines and we have one the oracle package can be taken over by another machine if one fails. We are Oracle 9i.

I'm thinking of using smaller machines or cluster of machines serving oracle. Similar to a LINUX Cluster and Oracle. Can this be done in UNIX? My goal is use cheaper ( entry level ) UX machines, but be able to add more machines as part of the pool of servers serving oracle if more horsepower is needed.

THANKS!!

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

ServiceGuard is available for Linux, so you should be able to create similiar clusters for Oracle on that platform too

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

You should look at SG/LX (ServiceGuard for Linux).
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

or are you asking if hpux and linux can exist in the same SG cluster?

hmmm i'm thinking of a hpux cluster.

Can a LINUX and HPUX cluster work together?

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

If you are thinking of a hpux cluster, then you are going to be limited to hpux machines. In which case, linux would be out of the question. So, to answer your question, begin looking at lower end hp servers but be sure to no overlook the inherent redundancies built into the servers, ie. power supplies and NIC cards, etc when specifying the servers.

I don't believe that linux and hpux can coexist on the same SG cluster. There is incompatability in the kernel instruction between the two processors for mutual sharing of executables to exist.

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

One thing that you're not going to be able to do, though, is to split up the processing within the cluster unless you begin to look at Oracle parallel processing, which could really muck up the cluster configuration etc...

Re: Design for UNIX Clusters and Oracle

Hi halili,

IF you want a cheaper os stay with HP-UX for oracle. We have done oracle on linux but when you have more then 4 cpu needed for the oracle database the trouble begins. We have it now running on our system but a new project is started to get it back on hp-ux.
My experience is linux look cheaper but is expencief in maintence en troubles.
