Destined to crash...

I've recently acquired an HP workstation with a heavily underpatched 11.00 on it. No backup tape. No program would install without first installing a bunch of patches of course. No problem, lets do backup! Hmm.. how to... ahh course, Ignite it is. Wait just a... it needs patches too. Computing... (do you really want to use this piece of engineering marvel?...nahh yeah course) -> install those patches for Ignite (they need reboot you know) -> kernel panics next round. Cool! Lets go shopping!

Re: Destined to crash...

Is it an important box?

Try and boot the old kernel or reinstall the OS. It sounds like it's stuffed!

Re: Destined to crash...

What about trying fbackup or maybe cpio just to get the backup done.

Re: Destined to crash...

I have hp-ux 9.04 on one of my workstations and it works a charm! (Never figured out how to list installed software ;))

I recon the best thing to do is cold install hp-ux 11 (if you can get an external cdrom) or dd to a second internal disk.

You don't need to install so many patches for an ignite client for network recovery, pax and a few sd utils max, the box must be suffering from previous admin compression utils (rm for example)

Later,
Bill

It works for me (tm)

Re: Destined to crash...

Bill,

Quick-and-dirty: "ls /etc/filesets" or "ls /system".

Official: rmfn(1M). It is the pre-10.X equivalent of swremove, but can also list things.
