devices that detach themselves

OS is HPUX 11.23 and we have STK 9940 tape drives fiber attached. The backup software is Veritas Netbackup 6.0 MP3. From time to time we loose connectivity to the tape drivers b/c the devices file keep detaching themselves from the drives at the OS layer. From an ioscan -fnC tape the first 4 drives have no assosiated device files. So it look like this:

tape 17 0/3/1/0.2.12.255.0.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE STK T9940B
tape 18 0/3/1/0.2.17.255.0.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE STK T9940B

They actually exist under /dev but are not attached from ioscan -fnC tape.

The fix is to run an insf -e, but want to find out why it keeps occurring and the permenant solution.

thank you
derek

Re: devices that detach themselves

There have been lots of issue with STK tape drives, this problem may be because of old driver. Could you please check for the latest stape drivers ( patches will be available) and check with STK do they have a driver for hpux....

Like for IBm drives they have atdd drivers and for getting best results its advised to use drivers supplied by vendor, as this is not a HP product.
