Solution
hi,
newfs is a enhanced to mkfs
the man pages says:
The newfs command is a "friendly" front-end to the mkfs command. The newfs command calculates the appropriate parameters and then builds the file system by invoking the mkfs command.
it does almost one and the same
with best wishes
naveej

Re: difference between mkfs and newfs
Hi Amit,
mkfs creates a Linux MINIX file-system on a device.
Newfs replaces mkfs program.
Newfs is much easier in most circumstances. The only time you 'have' to use mkfs is if you are growing an already existing filesystem.
regards,
sam

Re: difference between mkfs and newfs
newfs applies defaults to filesystem layout....mkfs allows more granularity...
For example, on a 11i system, the default vxfs version is 4. Say your backup server is 11.0 - and you want to mount the filesystem locally - well, you won't be able to unless you created the file systems like so:
mkfs -F vxfs -o largefiles -o version=3 /dev/vgXX/rlvolX
