Difference between VMWARE and HP Virtual Machines

Please help me enumerate the similarities and the differences between HP Virtualisation technology, HP VM and VMWARE ?

First and foremost, HP VM will not run on commodity level X86 architecture machines, whereas VMware's main focus is x86 architecture and only x86.

In case I wish to implement and integrate HP VM based Data center rather than VMWARE based Data Center, what do I need, especially in term of software ?

You need HP's Integrity Virtual Machines product which is available here.

Needless to say, you will need products, most importantly and operating system, that will run on Integrity instruction set. As far as I know, only HPUX, OpenVMS, Linux (I think) and maybe an oddball version of Windows is capable of running on Integrity and if you run windows as your os, do not assume every windows program will run as they do on X86 machines.

Note that HP's VM implementation has a specially focused purpose, mainly for high end, resource demanding applications, which generally means using HPUX. If you are planning a data center to host, let's say websites or general purpose applications that you don't know anything about but just want to build an infrastructure, it is best for you to go with VMWare or one of its competitors.

I go along with Mel on this one, we could spend some time on the differences between both but it wouldn't be fair; each product is designed for its own market.

Integrity Virtual Machines is for... Integrity Machines and should be considered only if you want to virtualize HP-UX or OpenVMS, or if you have a need to use Linux or Windows on the itanium architecture which is mostly suitable for scalable or high performance stuff.

Besides that, any other use should go on the x86 platform which is generic, cost-effective, and on which VMware (and others) are able to cater to a wide audience.

HP VM only runs on hosts running HP-UX.

vmware will run on any wintel hardware, linux or windows.

vmware specifically xen and linux derivatives will not run on Itanium IPF IA64 hardware. HP VM will.
