Disk Error

I have received an EMS notification where the device was unsuccessful in reading data for the current I/O request due to an error on the medium. I have attached the file. I have checked the disk using ioscan and it is CLAIMED. The findings of pvdisplay and diskinfo are pasted in the attached file. What else can i do the confirm that the disk is not faulty. Also i have confirmed it with dd command and there were no read errors. Kindly advise. Thanks

Re: Disk Error

Sorry, as the dd o/p was not mentioned in the earlier attachment. Attaching the file again.

Re: Disk Error

Almost certainly you are going to start seeing these errors more frequently. The disk is becoming flaky. Often, if disks with these errors are powered down they will not come ready again. I assume that you have a good mirror and backup. If this were me, I would replace the disk now. Of course, I always have on-hand spare disks for all of my various disk models.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Hi
Don't risk, replace disk. I had similar error and HP service said replace immediately, before you can plan downtime.

Re: Disk Error

Seems its a dodgy disk, best is not to take chance and go ahead and replace it. If taking chances, you can monitor the disk for a while for any further errors.

Re: Disk Error

Hey Ashish,

U can also check out the read/write errors through mstm in the particular disk, just keep a note of the no. of errors and monitor that, if it increases u've gotta change the disk for sure..!!

Re: Disk Error

Hi Hunter,
I have attached mstm output. There are two write errors. What do you suggest, should i continue with the same disk or get it replaced? Thanks.

Re: Disk Error

Besides stm you can also check for SCSI errors in the syslog to verify that the disk is problematic i.e.

# grep SCSI /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

Re: Disk Error

Hi Amit,
I will continue to monitor the disk for a while and if the read/write errors increase i will make sure to get it replaced. Thanks for your useful inputs :-)
