Disk Exercise

is there Anyone knows wish of the following commands would thoroughly exercise a disk and do not harm data
cat,mv,cp or more.?
Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; but turn away from the ignorant.

Re: Disk Exercise

best excercise is
dd if=/dev/rdsk/c#t#d0 of=/dev/null bs=8k
This reads from raw disk device to null device and did not change anything on the disk

Re: Disk Exercise

Hi,

to exercise a disk it is usefull to read from the raw device instead from the filesystem.
cat, cp, mv, more are no good choices for that.
Use the dd command to read whole disk data:
dd if=/dev/rdsk/cXtXd0 of=/dev/null bs=64k
This only reads the from disk so no data will be changed.

Re: Disk Exercise

You could also use the "Support Tools Manager" to exercise a disk.
The command for GUI-version is "xstm".
Keep it simple
