disk problems -- device busy
After a reboot, one of my machines recently hung, unable to find a disk to boot from. Doing a "search ipl" doesn't bring anything up, but a plain "search" shows both disks as there.
If I boot from the support cd, then try to mount the disks, I get a "Device busy" error. I've also tried swapping the root disk from another identical machine into this machine. This is able to boot, but during the boot, it complains that the secondary disk is busy. After it boots, if I try to mount it by hand, I get the same complaint.
Anyways, I suspsect that there is a problem with the disk, but I'd like to know what else I might try before I give up on it. I have a feeling that I might be overlooking something.....
Thanks,
Paul

Re: disk problems -- device busy
Quoting from Melvyn Bernand, an HP engineer from a thread just a few days old.........
"the fact that a search for ipl shows nothing indicates that there is
no bootable disc available! Are you sure your boot disc is actually
there? i.e. on the search results is the primary boot disc visible?
If yes, and it is not showing up under th eipl search, then you
have no boot record there. You will either need to re-install, or try
to recover from your support media by booting from the support
media and attempting to recover/re-create the boot area.
Of course there could be something failing on the disc ;-{ "
So you are left with either recreating the boot area of the disk or giving in to your darkest thoughts and replacing the drive before it fails utterly. If it is under support then replace the drive, no question about it.

Re: disk problems -- device busy
We have had that several times on different machines, all of them ended up by replacing the bad drive and loading the make_recovery tape.
You say that you don't have a backup tape?
