Re: disk usage

Hi,

Read the patch description.

Re: disk usage

I think you can look at the .depot file and examine the "size" field:

size 72473

The first size field should be the total for the entire package. Subsequent sizes would be for individual components.

Re: disk usage

The patch description file for patch PHKL_24518 only has the patch package size unless I have missed it !

Re: disk usage

Once you start your 'swinstall' screen, the analysis phase will tell you how much space is needed on which file system.

You can check this by checking the log file and if that's okay, you can proceed with your patch installation.

Re: disk usage

While you run swinstall before installing the patch system will 'analyze' the installation. You will see how much space it's going to utilize it. If you think space is going to be less then you can stop patch installation at that point.

Re: disk usage

I think a simple "bdf" would work, unless I misinterpreted the question.

Re: disk usage

Sorry, I misinterpreted the question:) You want to know how much space is required for a patch. I think that is usually stated in the documentation of the patch.

Re: disk usage

John,

I really think you're going to have to examine the contents of the PHKL_24518.depot file. All the information is in there, it's just a matter of recognizing and retrieving it.

Re: disk usage

Pete

why do you call me John ?

I have now downloaded one of the patches onto the dreaded server and untarred it. I subsequently ran the create depot script and it created a file PHNE_28760.depot ( yes I know this is not the one i started out with )
this file is not an ascii file so how do i retrieve it. Im really lookinf for a way of getting diskusage without having to put the patches onto the boxes.

will the disk usage be the same across different platforms ?

thanks

Re: disk usage

Try it wit tar.

# tar tvf PHNE_28760.depot | more

Re: disk usage

Robert

tar just tells you the content of the file ie which files are in the archive not the disk usage.

Re: disk usage

Bear in mind that a few patches or installs builds files and new kernels "on the fly" so that the answer very much depends upon the particular platform. What you are asking is impossible without running swinstall -p.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: disk usage

Bruno, I think that yendenos wants to know how the size of the fs are affected after the patch installation rather than the space needed to install it. Correct?

Re: disk usage

I referred to you as John because it appeared that you signed your second post that way. Apparently I was confused. No offense!

Re: disk usage

One way to see this would be to go to "Patch Database Home":

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/crumbRequest.do?crumb=patch.breadcrumb.main&BC=

Search for the patch you want.

Example: PHNE_28982

Click on the patch name, then select "patch files" - that will tell you with file(s) (with full path) will get patched.

There is a "patch package size" as well...
