Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hello,

Since yesterday i a having a problem with a C 200 HPUX running 10.20.

Usually when it boots up i can see that i have a option of pressing TAB to select the display type and change the boot process now all i see is juast a blank screen. But the Host is up with all products just that no one can work on the console but everything else on the network is fine.

I Tried replacing the Monitor frmo anothe c 160 machine but no luck.

Does anybody have ways of troubleshooting the problem we ather its a monitor or the card or anything else.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Check the following file : Xservers does not have a # on the last line it should read :

* Local locale@console .... if there's a comment in front remove it !

then restart CDE ....

fyi : Xservers is located in /usr/dt/config and /etc/dt/config in the case of CDE : for VUE look in /usr/vue/config and /etc/vue/config

NB the /etc files take precedence over those in /usr.

Next check if CDE or VUE are running ps -ef | grep dtlogin or vuelogin .

If they are it sounds like something more basic : check this out .....

Hello Alex,

Thanks for the prompt response.

What you have posted in reply has been looked into but i am still exploring the link you have mentioned in the reply.

This is the output of
#ll /etc/*crt*
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 174 0x000000 May 15 2001 /dev/crt
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 174 0x000000 May 15 2001 /dev/crt0
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 174 0x000001 May 15 2001 /dev/ocrt
crw-rw-rw- 2 bin bin 174 0x000001 May 15 2001 /dev/ocrt0

and this of the
# ioscan -FnC graphics
pa:wsio:F:F:F:-1:229:4294967295:graphics:graph3:10/12:0 64 0 138 0 0 119 0 1 0 0 0 97 181 0 2 :0:root.ccio.graph3:graph3:C

If you have any inputs with regards to this then let me know.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi,

I think your primary console is shifted to some other device may be to the serial port on your system from graphics console.

You may have to identify the serial communication port1 in your system and connect a dumb terminal to that port where you can see the startup and boot screens while booting the server.

There you have to interrupt the boot process and goto IPL prompt where yo can chnage the primary console.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hello Alex,

Nope init 2 and CTRL,SHIFT,BREAK did not get me a prompt.

Hello Vijai,

Thanks for posting your comments,I do not have a dumb terminal to see weather its moved or not ie monitor to serial port or not). Can't i get to check it thru telnet and then change it to the monitor connected right now??

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Sounds like a cons / monitor path problem :

advise is to get a console or a working monitor , check the config at the Config Menu as per my other post.

Won't be able to do this via telnet/ remote login if this is the problem !

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Actually i did try with a Different monitor as i have mentioned in my first post, but not on a console.

Can i try Hyperterminal??

If yes i know that i need both sides female connector as the ports on the PC and HPUX are Male connectors. The what kinda cable Cross/Straight between the connectors.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi,

Yes! you can use the hyper terminal from a PC but you must connect a serial communication cable from the serial port of the PC to the serial port of the server (This might be a 9 pin to 25 pin cable). Most of the Harware support organisations used have this cable.

Or other wise you can use any serial cables (9pin to 25 pin) that are supported by cisco switches /routers for console administration.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi,

You have to use the cross cable only.

Or other wise you can decide it by checking Rx(+), Rx(-) and (TX+) and (Tx-) signals on the serial ports and decide.(Transmit and receive signals. ie. +12vDC AND -12VDC)

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

I think the connection should be

DB-9(PC)-------DB-25(server)

pin 2 ----- 3
pin 3 ----- 2
pin 5 ----- 7

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi Vijay,

I have the 9-25 connector and trying with Hyperterm, i do not see anything when connected!!! on both the come ports.

Do i need to give some initiation commands or some specific port settings to use to see what i want to??

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi,

You may have to shutdown the server and restart it.

While booting the initial startup screens that you can interrupt and goto IPL to specify the primary console.

"press any key to interrupt the boor process appears"

If you get scrampled output on screen you may have to change the communication parameters like speed , parity, data bit and flow contol accrodingly.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi,

While bootimng,
"Processor is booting from first available device

To discontinue , press any key within 10 secs," appears

If you press any key then main menu appears and you hav to
follow the below mentioned steps,

Main Menu Enter >
Main Menu Enter >pa con
(It will display the current primary console.
In your case if it displays GRAPHICS(0) then it is ok.
If it displays something else like SERIAL_1 the you
have to follow with further steps )
Main menu Enter>
Main Menu Enter >in
(it will take you to information menu)
Information menu>
Information menu>
Information menu>io
(it will display all the i/o modules )
for serial ports the address will be SERIAL_1 ,SERIAL_2
for graphics port the address will be GRAPHICS(0) or similar to it.
Information menu>
Information menu>ma
Main menu Enter>
Main menu Enter>pa con graphics(0)
(This will cahnge the primary console to graphics(0). IF you have
more than one graphics card then you have to specify accordingly)
Main menu Enter>
Main menu Enter>reset

Now the system reboots and now it should display the startup screen sequences on the monitor connected to graphics card.

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Hi sumedha,

I understood from your comments, that the serial cable you are using to get the console screen on the terminal is not helping out. Did you check the continuity of the serial cable?(Is it a working one?)

1)Are you able to get the CDE atleast, in your Monitor screen, after the system fully boots?

2)There is a LED in the Monitor showing the connection status. Is it red in colour or green?

3)What is the command output of the command #ioscan -fnC graphics and
#ioscan -kfnC graphics?

4)What if you open sam and see
a)sam > display > x server configuration>

Is it showing any screen name and it's details?

b)sam > display > monitor configutaion>

Is it showing any screen name and it's details?

5)Did you try swapping the cable attaching monitor and workstation box?

6)Did you register a call with HP Support organisations?

7)If required you can shift the graphics card from it's current slot to the any other slot in the same system to confirm whether problem is with the graphics card or with the system board (mother board) but you need to open the system and require to have h/w expertise?

8)Even you can think of shifting the display card between two workstations?

Re: Display Problem on C Class HPUX 10.20

Following check may help

1. Before trying with serial cable and hyper terminal, You have to disconnect the normal keyboard and mouse which you use usually

2. Do you have more than one Display ports, try them all

3. Chcek whether there is any damage in the cable pins. Try with a different cable
