DNS/BIND on HPUX 10.20

Hi all:

Does HP-UX 10.20 support DNS/BIND at the 8.x level? Will it be HP supportable?

Re: DNS/BIND on HPUX 10.20

Hi Rick:

As indicated in earlier posts, Bind 8.X is not supported on 10.20 ( I think it can be compiled though)

Re: DNS/BIND on HPUX 10.20

DMS/BIND History:
HP-UX 9.X and 10.X shipped with BIND 4.8.3.
Patches bring BIND on 10.X and 11.0 FCS to a 4.9.7 version (BIND 4.9.3 was not reliable.)

With BIND 4.9.7, you want to use patch PHNE_20618 BIND 4.9.7 components.

BIND 8.1.2 is available for HPUX 11.X only, from software.hp.com.

More current versions of BIND are under investigation in the HP labs for both 10.20 and 11.00 but there is no official word on what will be available next.

Re: DNS/BIND on HPUX 10.20

Here are my thoughts (for whatever they are worth). At HP World it became apparent that HP's development resources are being poured into 11i. If you watch the weekly patch notices for both 10.x and 11.x, it appears that 10.x is in bug fix mode (particularly pre 10.20 releases). I don't think that you are going to see any major enhancements to 10.x in the base OS anymore. There may be some major OpenView enhancements, but this product line is handled differently anyway. This is not to say that 10.20 is dead. I think it's more of a case similar to what we experienced with 9.04 a few years ago. With 10.20 you have a very stable OS and it will remain that way for at least a couple of years (and there is no Y2K pressure to get rid of it either).

So, with this in mind, I doubt you will see anything happen with BIND at 10.20 (from HP). BIND 4.9.7 is currently supported and works fine. As you've probably noticed from the other post threads, the PD version of BIND 8.x.x is available from a variety of sources or can be compiled yourself. PD BIND 9.x.x is available also, but I don't think that it is really ready for prime time yet. 9.x.x has support for IPv6 and DNSSEC; not exactly main stream features now. If you are really looking for an HP supported version of BIND 8.x.x, it seems that an upgrade to HPUX 11.x is your only choice.
