DNS failures

I'm having an issue with resolving adresses on a WINNT DNS server. I keep getting the error "non-existent domain" whenever I try to do an nslookup and it then immediately falls over to the secondary DNS server. I beleive it to be an issue on the NT machine and not my UNIX box but was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and point me in the right direction.

thanks

Re: DNS failures

Do you have domain xyz.com line in your /etc/resolv.conf file?

Re: DNS failures

yes, the resolv.conf has the domain name in it. We originally had DNS up and running properly with a UNIX primary and secondary, but unfortunately corporate is forcing the change.
just hit enter, what could it hurt?

Re: DNS failures

Jacob,

Double check that /etc/resolv.conf "nameserver" entry for the NT nameserver. Verify the IP address and that there aren't any hidden characters in the file. Is it REALLY a DNS nameserver, or is it only a WINS nameserver?

Use the techniques described in the O'Reilly book, "DNS and BIND" by Albitz and Liu to further debug nslookup.

Hope this helps a little,
