Does HPUX 11.0 savecrash process partial dumps

Hello everybody,

Recently had our venerable T600 (HPUX 11.0)Reboot after system panic: Non-access data TLB miss.

After reboot found the following in rc.log:
savecrash: Cannot save incomplete dump.
EXIT CODE: 2 savecrash found no core dump to save.

Excerpt from crashconf -v :
Total pages on system: 1376256 (4K)
Total pages included in dump: 184688 (4k)
64:0x000002 /dev/vg00/lvol2 524288 (1K)

I understand my swap/dump device is undersized so I got a partial (incomplete) dump.

Doesn't savecrash process incomplete dumps?

I've set SAVECORE_DIR to file system outside of vg00. Is there any problem with this config.
Can savecrash write outside of vg00 during the boot process?

I'm planning on adding a 800MB dump volume to the mix. So I'll have a 512MB swap/dump and a 800MB dump volume. So how will the dump be written to swap or dump?

Re: Does HPUX 11.0 savecrash process partial dumps

Hi,

Actually there was no dump to the disk. Code 2 indicates no dump while code 3 is partial dump.

Your crashconf tells you the configuration of your crashdumps and what is *going* to be included in the dump.

You may not want to include buffer pages and unused pages into your crash dump as they may not provide much details.

You will need to find out why there was no dump first.

Re: Does HPUX 11.0 savecrash process partial dumps

Your best bet is create a separate filesystem and mount it on /var/adm/crash, that way you can take you time in running savecore knowing that the crash dump has been saved to the filesystem. The logical volume for /var/adm/crash does not need to be in vg00 as savecore is run after localmount in runlevel 2. Take a look at my reply in theis thread on how to set it up. That post applies to 11.x , but the fundamental remains that same (in 10.20 it's called savecore instead).

Thank You for your responses. I found the sys_crash.txt file very helpful.
Hope the point assignment was equitable (if not objective).

Thanks Again

You should be able to do q4 analysis on it.

Attaching instructions.
