Dynamic memory configuration on IVM.

I have four virtual machines, I have configured the static memory -r 5G, so what i want to do is have dynamic memory working and be able in some ocassions to reduce on 2 machines the ram to 3G dynamcly and add 2 gigas to the other to machines.

So i could have two machines with 3 and the other two with 7G

The problem I find is when i try to put the -x ram_dyn_max=7G

it tells me it can't be bigger than the -r 5g you put on the static

And if I put on the 4 machines the -r 7g, it tells me it doesn't have enough resources to boot up.

So how are you supposed to make this work?, if you want in a certain moment more ram for a machine?

thnx
Windows?, no thanks

Re: Dynamic memory configuration on IVM.

I assume your talking a total 20GB for 4 clients?

Your total static is 28 and you have 20 available. That's why it wont start. Also, you can't have a bigger dynamic value than static.

You'ld have to reduce the static on some vm clients and increase it on the others (still within you 20Gb limit) - a process that isn't actually dynamic and probably not going to help in your case.

If the servers with the lighter load ever need the 5Gb you've assigned i'd be looking for some more memory.

It's also worth checking out some of the other articles in this forum for best practices when it comes to sizing vm clients.
