error writing to tape device
hi guys,
the problem that im experiencing right now is kinda estrange. i have a k250 box, for a long time i've been using the dds3 tape drive and dds3 (sony) cartridges for backup (using a script with informix' onunload backup). just recently i encountered an error (error no = 5). using tar i was able to read and write from the dds3 drive using hp dds2 tape. not having enough dds2 tapes i then use hp dds1 which brought about the message "error writing to tape device error no. = 28" what does this mean?
my suspiscion was i have a defective drive. so i replace it with my spare dds2 drive. i then perform a backup using hp dds1 tape, i was able to perform a succesful backup for small data (note: this is also true using dds3 drive and hp dds1 tape) but for larger data when it is supposed to ask for the next tape, again, i encounter error no = 28 "error writing to tape device". today i am performing a backup using hp dds2 tape on the dds2 drive, and so far i was able to go to the next tape and still backing up....can i have your ideas on what is possibly wrong with my system? could it be a patch?
regards,
danny

Re: error writing to tape device
guys..the backup just finished and it is successful. note that i used dds2 drive and hp dds2 tape here. what could possibly wrong with dds3 drive?
again, i would like to reitterate that i was able to perform successful backups before using this drive and sony dds3 cartridges. is this normal?

danny

Re: error writing to tape device
A DDS3 tape drive can READ a DDS1, but NOT write.

Re: error writing to tape device
I dug a little more, and Stefan Farrelly has a way to do so:
