Re: error
Sendmail has a built in limit to how many simultaneous connections it will tolerate.
It also will not accept connections if system load factor exceeds 25.
I'd try and look at your logs to see why there are so many connections. /var/adm/syslog/mail.log
I'd also check system load factor. Your system may be under denial of service or spam attack.

Re: error
Can you tell me as which variable or file where the Sendmail limited connections value is defined and also how to verify whether the connections has crossed that limit.

Re: error
see: /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
...
# Queue-Only Load Average (option QueueLA): #
# #
# In order to limit load on a very busy system, sendmail can be #
# configured to queue up low priority messages rather than attempt #
# delivery immediately if the five-minute load average is greater #
# than some integer value, by default 8. This value is defined on #
# the line beginning O QueueLA=. #
# #
# Refuse-Connections Load Average (option RefuseLA): #
# #
# In order to limit load on a very busy system, the sendmail daemon #
# can be configured not to accept SMTP connections if the five- #
# minute load average is greater than some integer value, by #
# default 12. This value is defined on the line beginning #
# O RefuseLA=. #
...
hope this helps!
kind regards

Re: error
Sure. You'll have to restart sendmail afterwards.
