extend vg/lvols

hello,
i have an eva8000, connected to hpux servers.
i have to extend one filesystem (/dev/vg01/lvol1).

i don´t have an onlineJFS license.
in the past, i created a new LUN on the eva,... vgextend, lvextend, extendfs.

but now i read, that (like windows) it is possible to extend the LUN on the EVA and than (in hpux) the new size of the LUN is available (11.11 and 11.23).

so i could use the vgmodify command, and that´s all? i don´t think so?!?!?!?

thanks for response, best regards,
loop

Re: extend vg/lvols

I have not personally exprienced but on some v11.31 environments, online jfs and mirror-ux is included in the HPUX installation. And, regardless of how the licensing works for you, in order to do on-line resizing of any given filesystem, you will need online-jfs software.

So, you can create the new LUN on your EVA, then you can extend your volumegroup using vgextend and then extend the size of logical volume with lvextend, None of this requires on-lime JFS. But since you only listed versions 11.11 and 11.23, you will need an onlineJFS license to extend the size of the filesystem without taking it offline.

On 11.31 version of HPUX, what you said might be true, i.e., you extend the size of the LUN and filesystem size grows automatically. But I did not lay my hands on a 11.31 installation. So I can not say it first hand.

Re: extend vg/lvols

Hi Loop,

http://docs.hp.com/en/vgmodify/vgmodify_wp_modified_final.pdf

Have a look at above doc. In your situation it might be easier to create and add a new lun to the volume group. Besides that vgmodify is officially not supported for 11iv1.

Re: extend vg/lvols

thank you Mel and Robert,

so i will use the common way to extend my filesystem(s).

btw, if i am using 11.31 in the futere the way with vgmodify would work? without creating a new LUN?

Re: extend vg/lvols

Hi,

This is Still always good that we do follow the traditional (??) methods of addding new LUNS to the VG and then extending the VG and LV.
That gives us good flexibilty.
the underlying LUN you can increase and use vgmodify to sense that new piece of space for the VG, which then can be used for lvcreate and lvextend.
but the Question remains how would you do an extendfs ?
you require OnlineJFS to handle that and if you do not have OnlineJFS, I think you only have to resort to unmount the LV and extendfs.

I hope i am correct.
