Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Alan Meyer:
fast movers are marked with a pinkish backgoud on their "Diff" column. These are users who god more than 100 points from the last update.

Hein van den Heuvel:

Hmm, I think there is a misunderstanding ... Thumbs-down are given to the users that don't assign points to others. The means, that Jack assigned only 2 out of 5 answers. It can be easily fixed by assigning points to the answers he got *from* the others. There is *** nothing *** to do with bunny rate. I hope I cleared the misunderstanding. Please tell me if not.

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Hi Alex,

I just have one more piece of idea which might fix the lower points assign rate (thumbs down).

Shoot out automatic emails to people who are having less than 30% of points assigned to their questions. The email should contain links to individual questions for which they have not assigned points. The email can be sent once in a day until their points assignment percentage is above 30%. I know it may be annoying but we have no other choice other than forcing few people who don't respect the answers they get and the people who spend their valuable time in solving others problem.

Other way would be to start this off with people who are having 70% percentage, these people have actually assigned points to larger set of answers and the reason they could not assign points for remaining answers may be because of other works or they lost track of the thread. This might be a good starting point to experiment this method. Based on the success rate of this method we can try out with lower percentage people.

My 2 cents,
Gopi

Gopi: NO

[very bold] N O [/very bold]

1. Point assignment is on a voluntary basis
2. We don't have e-mail addresses (and I think I'm glad)
3. The user already has a very simple way of finding unassigned threads: Go to your profile, scoll down a bit an click "questions or topics with unassigned points" in the "My Question(s) section.

I have no intention whatsoever to pested members with good intentions and/or good answers with this point assignment flame.
I'd like to keep my 100+%, but that is MY decision

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Gopi, I 234798234% agree with procura.

Assigning points it's a personal matter of each user. I added the icon, just to slightly point that user can assign more points to the helpful answers. If he chooses not to do so, it's ofcourse his full right, even that some are not very happy :)

The point of my site it's to display procura's database in a bit more graphical way and to get the maximum from the huge database he collected.

hi Alex!

t h a n k s

this is really brilliant!

I hope one day we will have the name of country "Mauritius" in this list -- Am using South Africa by default. The flag is red, blue, yellow and green stripes stacked in the named order.

The downside is that it will trigger a sense of point-hunting amongst some of us... :(

anyway... good job!

cheers

Alright procura and Alex, I agree with your suggestions, it does make sense.

But how about adding this thumbs down icon to ITRC forum (I know the decision has to be done by HP, but still). This can be another head gear for those who don't assign points :)

Ah! My misunderstanding entirely. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

I've changed my mind - I agree with Hein - the "thumbs down" focuses on the negative - I'd rather see the focus on the positive....

So, I think for those with 100% should get a "smiley face" - that way we focus on a positive.

Or, not have anything at all - for points assignment is voluntary...

Let us not forget what these forums are for - to help each other.

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Geoff: lets not forget that the stats started solely to fullfill my own curiousity and the temptation to be able to parse the forum guts.

It was started *for MY FUN*

It has no influence from (or to) HP whatsoever, so I can do with it whatever *I* want.

The same counts for Alex. He just fetches *my* stats, and makes a wonderful presentation of them, which goes far beyond what I ever had in mind. Kudos for Alex.
If Alex likes to show his appreciation for whatever value is in the stats with a thumb-up icon, or dis dislike for a value with a thumb-down icon, that is *HIS* decision, and could not by any means be controlled by HP. I think his decision to show a thumb-down to show his (and many others on this forum) dislike to people that don't assign, is completely legitamate.

Think about it: how likely is it that the people that cat this icon will visit that page?

Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn [ who fears that Alex is having FUN too now ]

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Alex,
is it possible to add a link to a graphical representation of the progression for each forumer?

Thanks,

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Because I know Alex, I have think its his call on the thumbs or no thumbs issue.

I've never been a fan of negative reinforcement, but I say lets let Alex leaves the thumbs there and see if people have an incentive to make the thumbs disappear.

I think this is GREAT work and look forward to seeing future improvements.

Since this server is not on one of HP's superdome type servers and the database is mysql (correct me if I'm wrong), there may be some limitations on just how much processing of this data can be done.

:-)

Good news from me soon? Watch my profile.

I hope.

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Hey all, I appreciate your interest in my website and the "thumbs-down" issue.

If I may point your attention, in the forum profile of each user, there is clearly stated how much answers were assigned by this user. I don't calculate it, so obviously HP *wants* everyone to know the "assigning habbit" of each user, I think thre is nothing bad or insulting to show "thumbs-down" icon.

I showed this site to several "itrc veterans" before opening it to the public and they all agreed about the content.

About graphs of the progress, I think they will be ready by the end of this week.

Enjoy and have FUN! ;-)

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

Great job, Alex (and Merijn, of course)!

I agree with the stand that Merijn and Alex can do whatever they want with the presentation of the stats (within the bounds of reason and good taste, maybe). While the forums must focus on the positive (as we all should), their stats pages are strictly outside commentaries on forum activity and will generally be read by those forum members who are interested in stats. Those who have such an interest are also probably inclined to want to "fix up" any missed opportunities to assign points.

Bravo to both of you for a fun and useful tool for forumers!

Best Regards,

Dave

Re: Extended ITRC Forum Statistics

0 points please, I have already been here.

Merijn and Alex,

I have just now put two and two together, regarding the unlabeled red/green arrows, which Merijn referred to much earlier.

I had a calc teacher year ago, who patiently explained to us that numbers without labels are meaningless.

But on the other hand, Merijn's point is well taken, thinking about stuff is part of the fun!
