Re: fbackup failed ?

I'd check the device file, and just try a simple tar, or dd to the tape drive to make sure you can write to it.

Re: fbackup failed ?

Hi,
i would check to see if the directory pathname is an absolute pathname or a network pathname. Otherwise use the "-n" option for network pathnames.

Re: fbackup failed ?

Have you tried checking the S/W state with

ioscan -fnC tape

check to see if device is CLAIMED

Re: fbackup failed ?

1 ) Run ioscan

# ioscan -fnC tape
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=====================================================================
tape 0 8/16/5.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP C1533A
/dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/c1t0d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/0mb /dev/rmt/c1t0d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c1t0d0BESTnb
/dev/rmt/0mnb /dev/rmt/c1t0d0DDS1C
/dev/rmt/c1t0d0BEST /dev/rmt/c1t0d0DDS1n

Be sure it is claimed and look for the /dev/rmt/0m.

2) Check if you could use your tape drive other than fbackup ... ex. using tar
3) Are you using DLT ???? Check if tape is properly loaded.

Re: fbackup failed ?

I exerienced the same problem, I loaded the patch PHKL_20590 onto the system (with his dependencies) and then it worked.

Hopes this helps,

Re: fbackup failed ?

Shirley,

Check your syslog for any errors. I was having the same error on my server for a while. What I saw was that previously, backup had failed. For some reason, it did not free up the device (I could change it to one of the other tape deviced listed in SAM for backup). I would get errors using the other device, and then that one would not be valid. A reboot cleared up the devices, but errors in backup would make them invalid again. I installed a number of SCSI patches and tweaked around with the drive hardware, and we got those errors to go away. My advice, first check out the syslog. See if any errors show up about the time backup should run (SCSI errors, vx_ioerr, etc.). Also, try a manual backup (choose another device file for the time being). See if it is hanging somewhere or acting strangly. You might need to reboot the server to reclaim the device file (I had to). Let us know what you find. Good luck.
