fbackup in HP11i

Hi,

I just upgrade my D370 server from 10.20 to 11.11 over the weekend. Last night the incremental fbackup on the new HP11 took 6 hours instead of the usual 3hrs it took (with HP10.20). There's nothing changes on the graph and the config file. Is there any explanation for this? Thanks for your help.

This is a possible reason.
Backup utilities such as fbackup take longer to finish when JFS fancy read ahead is enabled, i.e., when vx_fancyra_enable is set to a non-zero value in the system file.

This should fix it

One way to deal with the problem is to turn off vx_fancyra_enable.

The problem is fixed in
patch PHKL_25022.

You just did an upgrade and because you are doing an incremental, EVERY file was backed up!

Thank you for your help, unfortunately the problem is still there. The patch was install and the backup still takes more than 6hrs. The vx_fancyra_enable is set to 0.

You need to perform a full backup, then your incremental's should be a little faster.

The full system backup took 7hr35min and the incremental backup took 6hr32min after I install the patch.

That's about right. Incrementals don't necessarily speed up backups eponentially, because every file must still be examined. This is especially true when the use of the system changes and more and/or larger files are modified. Have you tried to change the number of reader processes? The default is 2, the max is 6.

I increased the reader process to 6 and the time is still 6hr+.

I upgraded 2 D370 servers and the server1 works fine during the upgrade as well I had no problem with its backup.

As for this server2 - after the upgrade the system reboot into single user mode and it complains about the /stand/vmunix was not loadable. I had to manually bring the system up to multi-user mode at the prompt and after that the /stand/vmunix error no longer appear. I'd checked all the /etc/rc* files, the root shell, the /etc/inittab and /etc/gettydefs files and there's nothing to say where it gone wrong. Now the backup is still taking 6hr+ after the patch install. Any help is appreciate.

On HP-UX 11.X, fbackup's "-v" option will cause it to report how many blocks it wrote to tape. Please post that information here and the (detailed) type of drive, i.e. DDS, DLT, LTO and which subtype, i.e. for example DLT 7000. Also please post the "blocksperrecord" parameter.
