Re: Format system

mediainit will do the trick, though once its done' you'll have no place to reference the command.

Assuming the system is planned for future use, a more efficient use of your time would be do do a 11.00 or 11.11(if installable) installation. If you use the same boot disk, all contents existing will be erased.

Re: Format system

Hi when you say the system doesn't boot. Then to do any mediainit or anything you need a system prompt(machine should boot) this can be done either by recovery disk.
Or the best thing is to rebuild the system. Boot the system through CD(core/recovery CD) and install fresh.
And if you want any old data import those disks or do a pvcreate to assign VG or mediainit if you really want to do low level formating of the disks.

Re: Format system

mediainit is an HP-UX command so you can't run it unless you can boot. Since the boot path problem is not well defined, the disk may be bad or the address of the bootable disk was changed, or the cable fell off, or a number of other problems. So it isn't clear what good a format will do. Installing a new copy of HP-UX will erase the data on the old disk but only if the disk is working.

Re: Format system

If it is just the boot path problem, you could just ste the currect path and boot, I am not undermining your knowledge of setting the right boot path but as you mentioned, you just need to set the currect path.

If your boot area is bad on the disk then you could try to boot from support CD and repair/rebuild the boot/LIF area. For this boot from support CD and then select the repair the boot sector( Selection may be worded differently but it will mean this). And then you should be okay. If you just want to get rid of that you have currently on the disk, then just reinstall 10.20 or 11.0 or 11i on your system.

hope this helps..

Re: Format system

Hi,

mediainit is the command to format the system, but you can't run this command unless the system is up. for your scenario installing the OS is the way.
never give up
