Fresh Install of 11i not working - Cannot open /stand/vmunix

Hi All,

On my 11.0 L2000 Box I removed an AutoRaid and
two SCSI cards (they were not being used).
I then reboot (shutdown -r) the box and TIGER
(my box) came up with no major problems.

I then proceeded to do a Fresh install of 11i.
I put the 11i OS disk in and configured my
new file system and picked the software I
wanted and hit GO.

The first time it came back, it said SYSTEM ALERT 12 Software Failure - Major Changes in System state - my boss said that was OK since I
removed the SCSI cards.

Well, ever since then my system is "hosed".
It is saying:

/stand/vmunix cannot open or not executable

And I am stuck in ISL mode
if I type ISL>HPUX I get the above same
error.

The RED Fault light keeps blinding. I have
powered TIGER off and on, and tried to interrupt and boot off a CD and it won't let me.

What can I do? What did I do wrong? I'm
feeling very depressed about TIGER. I have
a deadline to load a new 11i OS by the end
of the day.

Laurie :(

Re: Fresh Install of 11i not working - Cannot open /stand/vmunix

Hi,

When you get to isl
try
ISL>hpux ll
it should list potentially bootable kernels.

ISL lives on the boot disk, and is placed on vg00 ie root/boot vg creation by install

try
from Command Menu: Main Menu> SEA
just in case you changed hardware address of the install.
PA should report boot paths. (and can set too)
BO will boot from one of the paths
Make sure you boot from the same path you installed to.

You might want to post up the console logs and the GSP error messages for review.

Later,
Bill
It works for me (tm)

Re: Fresh Install of 11i not working - Cannot open /stand/vmunix

Hi Laurie

Do a cntrl B to go to the GSP mode and then press return return for name and passwd

then clear the alrm logs and RS , boot with the CD and u should be albe to reload the OS , are you trying through the webconsole ??

Also the reason you cannot fing HPUX bootable is that there are not bootable kernel on the system so you need to do a fresh install again .

sea ipl will give you the paths where u can boot and then go ahead and boot from CD and redo fresh install.

Re: Fresh Install of 11i not working - Cannot open /stand/vmunix

Hi,

Seems your machine has lost the bootable kernel. Search for executable hpux utility by using this command at ISL prompt

ISL> hpux ll
This should list a few files including the vmunix. Here you need to see whether any of the vmunix kernels have got an asterik(*) on the right hand side of the file as listed. The vmunix (kernel) which has got an asterik on the RHS will be bootable. If there is no asterik, then your machine has lost the bootable kernel ..

I think you need to give the sea command at ISL prompt and make sure that you are trying to boot from the correct disk ..

If the hardware setting (boot path etc.) is correct, then there is only one way reinstall the OS.

Cheers !!!

Re: Fresh Install of 11i not working - Cannot open /stand/vmunix

I can't offer any assistance on this topic but only state that I'm currently experiencing exactly the same problem. I've cold installed 11i on an L-class and then subsequently installed MirrorDisk and ServiceGuard. This appeared to be working fine until I rebooted and then bang, cannot open /stand/vmunix... I have been into the recovery shell and I can locate the partition and the kernels and all appear valid, readable and executable, yet no boot
Like you I'd rather not have to reinstall the whole system again... Can anyone offer any help ? My Primary path is 0/0/2/0/0.2.0.0.0.0.0 - is there any way of verifying that this is correct ? (This is the disk that the hpux commands interrogate - hpux ll ,...)
