I know that this is a HPUX forum but here I found the best answers also for Sun Solaris :-))
So, our Omnibak system will be upgraded this week to Data Protector and I need to perform a full backup for one SunSolaris Server (about 48GB filesystem - there is an Oracle Database on it , too). I have only user experience with Solaris - what is the best tool (like fbackup) to use for this task? I'm aware of usfdump but I don't know if it can span multiple tapes (I have DDS3) and how reliable is?
Solved! Go to Solution.

Solutionufsdump is the standard utility for Solaris system backups. Use ufsdump for backing up the OS partitions only, it will easy fit on one DDS3 media. Shut down Oracle and use OmniBack for a cold filesystem backup of the complete Oracle instance (including the Oracle executables).

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
Adding a Solaris script I use. You have to change some variables and change the mailadress.
Hope it helps,
Robert-Jan.

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
I cannot use Omniback more for backups, because it will be upgraded today. Is it safe to make an Oracle backup with ufsdump, too? - I have shutdown the database and now I'm in single user mode.
regards,
ionut

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
As the database is shutdown and it is a cold backup. The ufsdump is level 0 --full backup should be fine.
Thanks

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
also note that the ufsdump command makes two passes when backing up a file system. On the first pass, it scans the raw device file for the file system and builds a table of directories and files in memory. It then writes the table to the backup media. In the second pass, ufsdump goes through the inodes in numerical order, reading the file contents and writing the data to the media.
Typically, dump-file specifies a raw device file for a tape drive. When ufsdump writes to an output device, it creates a single backup file that might span multiple tapes.
hence, you should be able to span the backup across multiple tapes.
And as long as your database is down, an UFSDUMP backup should be OK.
Best Regards

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
If I understand you correct you are going to upgrade OmniBack to Data Protector, not remove OmniBack. You can do a backup of your Oracle installation with your current OmniBack release, upgrade to Data Protector, and if you need, restore from the OmniBack media. OmniBack and DataProtector medias are compatible.

Re: Full Backup Sun Solaris
Perhaps my previous answere was not an answere of your question. Of course ufsdump can be used for a cold Oracle backup but it is much easier to use OmniBack/Data Protector for general backups. ufsdump/ufsrestore is needed for system backup as OmniBack/DP can't be (easily) used for distaster recovery of a system disk.
