Is there any way of seeing if a DLT drive on a remote machine needs to be cleaned

Only if you use some high level backup software, like HP's Omniback. It can recognise a drive needs cleaning and inform you.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Hi,

If it is in a library, you can define a cleaning slot. The library will take the cleaning tape if it needs it.
