FYI: /etc/set_parms obsoleted in future versions of HP-UX

As part of the transition from HP-UX 9.0 to HP-UX 10.0, HP provided the following symbolic link:
/etc/set_parms -> /sbin/set_parms

Subsequent HP-UX releases through HP-UX 11i v2 retained this symbolic link; however, beginning in HP-UX 11i v3, this link will not be provided. Instead, set_parms is available to the user as /sbin/set_parms. If you have scripts that reference /etc/set_parms, you can begin the necessary revisions now.

Is this the end of transition links by default?

Hi,

Bill: lets wait - many third party packages - I remember definitly Clearcase - have the TL-package as a requisit...

Hi Bill & Peter:

Obviously "deprecation" takes a long time :-))

Seriously, the best (but somewhat old) reference I've found is the September 2004 release notes for 11.23 (11iv2) -- chapter 10, Transition Links (Deprecated). At least it identifies some discarded; some retained; and some converted to "standard" symbolic links:

Oh, I'm not holding my breath. When I gave my first seminar on version 10.0 back in 1995 (when the V.4 layout was introduced to HP-UX), the transition link feature was "to be removed as the default in some future release". However, even then, tlinstall would still exist beyond that release to allow putting back the old links. Given the new product versioning for 11i, I guess version 12 should be coming out in another 10 years, perhaps then all the links will become an option?

Or maybe the links will be optioned out a few at a time such as 11i v2? Any release notes for v3 available publicly yet?
