Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

But where is VSE? The AVIO is there, as is the management tools but good old "hpvmstatus" and "hpvmnet" are nowhere to be found.

Do I have to download this separately from the HP website?

Confused, Ian Dennison

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

No, you have the software.
As the vPar and Integrity Virtual Machine software are mutually exclusive, they are NOT autromatically selected when you install the VSE-OE or DC-OE.
There are 3 categories of software for 11iv3:
Required: Always installed, you cannot deselect any software in this category

Recommended: Always selected for installation, but you CAN deselect any component

Optional: As the name implies, software in this category is optional, you need to manuall select what you want installed.

So the basic answer here is, you need to manually select either vPar or Integrity Virtual Machine software from the Optional softwar elist.

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

Mevlyn,

Thanks for the guidance. I attempt to install "T2767BC" - Integrity VM 4.0 but swinstall consistently refuses, claiming that "vmKernel.HPVM-KRN" is a pre-requisite that cannot be found. I can see it in an "ll" of the DVD mount, but not in an "swlist".

Is this product code-worded? Or is there a missing step in the process?

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

interesting. Is the Kernel fileset not perhaps already installed on the server?
You could also try using swcopy to copy the software to a local depot and see if that pulls in the relevant software.

Ah, you have more than one DVD? You need to install the VMKernel software from DVD #1, THEN install the Virtual Machines software from dvd #2

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

Melvyn

Tied the local depot option, combining software from both DVDs - no luck. Attached is an "swlist" from the Server. An older 3.5 Server does have the "vmKernel" product installed. My next option is to download the free version of 4.0 and hope the VSE LTU gets me through, otherwise its a full re-install and 2 days less christmas holiday than I planned.

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

PS. Done an swlist of the DVD # 1, and grepped for "kernel" in the output. "vmKernel" is not there.

root@tw05n0m0# grep -i kernel /tmp/swlist_dvd1
PRMKernelSW C.03.04 HP PRM Kernel Software
VMKernelSW B.04.00 Integrity VM Kernel Software

here is the "ll"

root@tw05n0m0# ll /dvd_rom |grep -i kernel
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Aug 5 2008 KERNEL-PROVIDERS
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 Aug 5 2008 KernelConfig
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Aug 5 2008 PRMKernelSW
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Aug 5 2008 VMKernelSW
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Aug 5 2008 vmKernel

Update: It appears that "Integrity VMs" product is not included in the VSE-OE.

well that should not be the case. theVSE-OE is specifically aime at the Virtuual Server Environment, and comes with both vPars and Integrity Virtual Machines.
One question to ask, what version/update level of HP-UX 11iv3 have you installed?

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

Melvyn,

We are using Mar 2008 VSE-OE, which is released for 11iv3 but does not appear to include the VM 4.x software that is required for 11iv3.

Am attempting to source the 4.x Media through a support vendor.

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

Aha! That is your problem.
You need the September 2008 release or Update3, to be able to install Virtual Machine softwre. It is not supported on your release.

Re: Got 11iv3 Data Centre OE installed on a BL870C

To be honest, if you are going to upgrade the OS to use it as a VM Host, I would go for the 0903 or 0909 release of HP-UX 11iv3, and then install the 4.1 version of Integrity Virtual machines:
