Re: greatest achievements

My greatest achievement? Hmmm. Other than being a single parent of 2 wild girls, I'd say.
Managing to stay employed when everything I 've done in the past 20 years is put myself out of work. Citicorp, P&G, and so on.. "I can save you money" Exactly what they want to hear. Consolidate servers, mainframes, midrange. Eventually I look around and say, "wow, I'm down to only two servers. Management say's, "we can house them at our hub". I saved you money? Then its a number "9" on my speed dial to my employment agent. But things are tough now, no jobs in MD area. So, my advice to mgmt is. " NT is not practical." Not enough hourse power pushing that fancy window. Cheap but many of them. I can run 3-4,or more NT's on a UNIX system. The truth hurts. "I cant watch windoze, bump a power house UX box".

Well,
it's a permanent fight !
I would say that find an open source software to avoid installation of closed software is each time a great achievement.

Re: greatest achievements

Re: greatest achievements

Hmmm, greatest achievement so far... Don't think i've reached my peak, still going onward and upward..

But one thing does stand out. In an interview, I am able to speak intelligently to the interviewer and find out in a lot of cases that the 'Tech' individual giving the interview trying to investigate my technical skills is not as knowledgeable as I thought they were (the look of awe is always a funny thing to see)... Which puts me in a better position to negotiate, since they quickly realize I know a little something about HPUX..

Re: greatest achievements

Oops, just thought of one..

Started a consulting assignment earlier in the year, and the company had just purchased two N-Classes.. I was asked to participate on the install/implement into the network, noticed that not only two Sr. Level UNIX Engineers were present, but also a Manager was present which seemed kinda peculiar since this type of activity is not rocket-science for an admin... They asked me to configure networking, so I pulled out my set_parms command out of the holster, and noticed how the Manager's mouth dropped to the floor when the other two 'Senior' admins stepped back and watched me put the two machines onto the network..

Aaaaahh,, knew I could think of one..

Re: greatest achievements

I was a (mostly Sun) SA at my former job. Two months after starting here, I migrated 2 TB of data from one storage system (Shark) to another (Hitachi) on an HP platform using LVM. All of the hardware and software was new to me, but it got done early and without any customer impact. Cool!

Re: greatest achievements

As a UX toddler, no SA accomplishments worthy of this thread come to mind.

But from my time as a CE and Response Center Engineer, I always figured I earned my keep when customers said things like "thank God I got hooked up with you...could I have your direct number for future reference...?"

And I have to say that Robert M. is *my hero* -- it's tough enough raising a couple of wild kids (mine are of the Mars variety), but doing it solo and keeping your head above water at work is a feat worthy of a large "S" in a diamond on your chest! I praise you (and every one else treading that path)!

Best Regards,

Dave

Re: greatest achievements

Last year after 1 year with HPUX I moved our 40GB Oracle Production database with Oracle Apps to a new server. It just passed the one year mark without a single crash, and with only .04% scheduled down time. After our last weeks group meeting (windows drive mapping problems etc) I am sooo glad I get to work with a REAL file system in UNIX!!! My hope for the future is to keep growing and learning so that I will remain useful - that WILL be my greatest achievement.

Re: greatest achievements

Bringing up a brand-new 32-way V-Class machine that the vendor had shipped not merely incomplete but TOTALLY BLANK AND UNCONFIGURED IN ANY WAY in 42 hours. Six of the 42 hours were spent looking for a BNC terminator (remember these?) for the thinnet connection to the service processor--at 2AM on a Sunday morning.......

A fantastic 14 yr old son in advanced math at the U as a 9th grader.

Still being employed in todays environment in spite of my big blunder this year.

Earning 3 US Patents with a former employer.

Reaching a salary goal I set 15 years ago.

Earning HP-UX IT Prof System Admin Certification last year.
Being very close to Oracle DBA OCP Certification.

Learning how to allocate LUN's from an XP512 to any server on the SAN, then bring the new space on-line (including configuring additional BC as needed) all in an hour or so.

Reaching 15 minute down time of Oracle Applications each night for full cold backups.

Re: greatest achievements

As I am reading though this thread I had to stop and think for a minute what my greatest accomplishment is. Yes I have learned allot over the last year and that is a big one. I have also contributed allot to my company with the things I have learned about hpux ( 99% of them from this forum ). But one thing really doesn???t stick out. But along the way I have earned the respect of all my peers at work. I have done allot of great things here and have proved that I come though with any project that gets brought to me. But one thing doesn???t stick out because everything I do is a step forward. And a step forward in your ???art??? is always great. Now the more I thought about it the more I am only 27 years old and I know is that I have not reached my greatest achievement. The question for me here is what am I proud of? And I am proud of many things. I am proud of the fact that I have learned so much over the last year and have become the man around here for hpux and now Linux issues. Another thing I am proud of is that I asked my boss about going back to school. I told him that I wanted at least a 2 year degree in computer science. My company does have a program where they pay a certain percentage up to 90% at the end of the semester. But my boss went one step further then that he told me that he would make a special arrangement that they will pay for 100% that includes books in advance. And that I won???t have to pay anything back if I bring home an A. So I am really proud of the fact that I am going to be going back to school. Now being the holiday season I am also proud that I am now in a situation where I am able to help needy kids more then I have ever been able to in the past. I think that is what its all about it. We work hard and put forth 100% and in turn we get compensated with a raise and we can turn around and help people who need it. And if everything is right you can even make a big differnece in someones life. NOW TO ME THAT IS THE GREATEST ACHIEVENT.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Making the system I maintain work for me instead of working for them. With the mind set if I have to do it more than once write a program to do it and let me know when it isn't done. Try to stay one step ahead of the next situation or question. I have been acknowledge for my uptime on all of my system and the applications that are run on and the problems that might occur.

Maintaining 45+ HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, IRIX, Tru64, FreeBSD and Windoze servers and workstations, 4 web servers, firewalls, VPN's and WAN's, and still have time to work with customers, MDL's sales force and this forum - and still have time left over to see my family!

Re: greatest achievements

On the humourous side: Recently I had to sit in a meeting with the most boring git giving a presentation on a product I knew more about than he did. I not only managed to stay awake, I also asked him so many questions that the answers were always, "I'll have to get to you on that!"

Now that was an achievement!

Re: greatest achievements

It all depends on the point of view:
Some years ago when I had just started working for a new company I was called upon by the receptionst. It was late on a Friday afternoon and she requested a "technician" - urgently, judging by the tone of her voice. I hardly qualified as a "technician", it was my first week with the company and had at that time not done anything without asking others first. However, I was the only person around and she urged me to come along. The problem turned out to be that a customer had got himself locked up in the men's room; he had in fact already spent an hour in there, unvoluntarily. The door was easily be opened with a swiss-army knife (literally speaking) and judging by the facial expression of the customer it must have been my greatest achievement as a "technician" ever!

Configured Apache server with PHP 4.2 and integrating Informix module, on HPUX 11i. For Informix you would hardly find any documents and finally intergating GD library and plotting graphs using jplot.
Its fun now extracting data from Database and playing with reports as you like.
It was really a great achievement without any assistance.

Re: greatest achievements

Hi,

I guess the one place people are likely to put their greatest achievements would be in their resumes.

So for me, my greatest achievements are spelt out in my resume:

Re: greatest achievements

Hi Siva,

Works fine for me over the Internet.

Try this:

# telnet www.beepz.com 443

You should see connected.

# nslookup www.beepz.com

You should see 218.186.64.125.

Btw, I presume your browser supports the HTTPS protocol.

Hope this helps. Regards.
