hard disk replace.

Hi all gurus!

I have a failed SCSI disk in my 2405 FC disk array on my HP-9000. Can I just replace the disk, or do I have to reboot or do other things to get the the mirror in sync?
The disk is one of two disks of a mirror. The VG contains only this disk.

Thanks in advance!

Re: hard disk replace.

Shalom,

The answer is: It depends.

Normal process.

Replace the disk hot, if its hot swappable. Most fairly modern disk arrays are hot swapable. There will be a handle of some kind on the disk.

pvcreate the disk.
re-mirror using lvextend

One inconsistent piece of information:
Disk is one of two disks of a mirror. The VG contains only this disk. Grammatically, the statement is inconsistent. Since you can't mirror across volume groups, if there is a mirror, the VG must contain at least two disks.

So please clarify.

If the disk is not totally dead, you can save yourself some time by running lvsplit to break the software mirror before you start replacement.

Shalom Steven,

You are absolutely right! Let's say that it was quite late when I wrote the post.
After a nice party and a good night sleep I just found the answers to do the trick.
Anyway, thanks for your quick response!

Cheers,
