Help?? Cloning a server with Ignite (Almost)?
My N-Class production server currently has quite a bit of hardware attached.
4 SC10 enclosures, 2x20 tape lib, Mux
I need to clone the entire OS to a new N-Class server. The issue is that the new box has less memory, no enclosures and no tape lib.
The enclosures are all on vg01-vg21 (mirrored)
The OS is of course all vg00 (mirrored).
I would like to use Ignite to do this as ignite will only take vg00 to the new box. The question is, when I boot the new box, what will it do when it sees less memory, no SC10's and no lib and no mirroring. Will the OS come up and then allow me to do housekeeping?
I need to get the current OS on the new box exactly as it exists today on the old box for application purposes.
Thanks,
Craig

Re: Help?? Cloning a server with Ignite (Almost)?
The standard ignite tool will do just that, except that it will include the drivers. You can clone the OS easily, without any other VG's
# make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn
(assuming that is your tape drive) You can make any mods you like, if not just proceed.
Boot the system, interrupt at the ten second prompt. Boot from the tape drive hardware address (get this beforehand if you can) and away you go.

Re: Help?? Cloning a server with Ignite (Almost)?
If it is possible for you, an alternative is to export all volumegroups but vg00 before creating the ignite archive and import them again after.

interactive means that you want to change the layout of the file system and other parms before loading.
this is where you change any file system sizes

Re: Help?? Cloning a server with Ignite (Almost)?
This is done with a series of steps including a modified make_sys_image.
There is a great deal of customization allowed, including disk/array connections. I set up a profile for each server which compensates for the slight differences in my three identical servers.
I recently cloned a D320 off a base Golden Image created for 64 bit L class machines. It came out with 32 bits and no attached disk.
Here is some documentation on creating and maintaining Golden Images.
I won't say its easy, but its quite powerful.
