how are you managing your unix documents?

hi

I have lot of unix documents like word docs, .TXTs, pdfs etc. I want to manage it. I need to know a easy way to organize it.

The way should be easily searchable...
I am sure i will give 10 points if it is really a nice way

Thanks
Vijay

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

We keep our docs in an Intranet (with Apache Web Server).

We try to use html most of the time.

We also use Envolution for our web site:

http://www.envolution.com/

But we are also evaluating Mambo:

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

I keep all mine in outlook folders then I can use all the mail tools to search and organize, and I don't have to worry about maintenance.
( we have a group of Microsoft folk to handle that)

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

Few suggestions:

1) Save the Unix documents as htm documents and store them in your apache web server. You can organize directorires and such.

2) Open up CIFS/9000 Samba and use Windows Explorer to manage the documetns. Sorry Harry.

3) Open up CIFS/9000 and use PVCS version management to keep the documents organized. We're in the process of doing that, which lets us set ownership based on the domain login, not the Unix login.

We keep our system documentation in .html and .txt format. They're kept in a CVS repository for version control and served out on the Apache server on the system.

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

we have all our documents in html. We use apache and a few perl scripts for searching and "filing" and it gives us options to add in some "live" documentation such as "bdf's" "ps -ef" etc etc.

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

Vijay,
We have a windows based CVS as well as a unix based.

All business related will go into the windows CVS. Mostly top management.

All technical related stuffs (html, code) will be put under the hpux CVS. Word docs are either converted into html or pdfs. Each team has its own apache from which they pick up these documents.

Re: how are you managing your unix documents?

Hi,

We also have our documents stored in a local web site. We have several categories to store servers info ( running cfg2html script every week ), with links to related procedures. Manuals, links, applications, downloads, etc.
Also we have a little "dynamic" FAQs page, where we can include easily little pieces of knowledge ( learning every day, but not every day have free time to make docs ). So in a fast way we can introduce new info and a little vbs script refreshes the faq page.

Kind regards,
Zigor
