HOw to check whether the HP UX server serial com port being open or used by other application

one way to check is to see if a getty is running on the port.
another way is to look on the
ps -ef output under the field TTY

I usually take fuser(1M).

e.g.
# fuser /dev/cul00
/dev/cul00: 4135o 4136o
