A better alternative would be to run samba
http://www.samba.org/ and then Windows can use exported directories as if they were normal Windows shares.

I would go with Bruno's direction of Samba. Its probably the best way to accomplish this.
An advantage of this approach would be the fact that you don't have to do anything on the client side. All you are required to do is install and configure SAMBA on your server and define the shares and accesses and you are all set to go. There is defintely nothing that needs to be carried out on the client machines (in your case on your XP).
I have used this for years and it works just great.
Also take note of the fact that you can download SAMBA at no cost :-)
